Vancouver Whitecaps’ Cristian Techera is doing his best to make fans forget his red-card blunder last month, helping Vancouver come back from two goals down thanks to his treble.

His first treble since 2013 allowed the Whitecaps to earn a tough point against a New England Revolution side that have slipped up recently, winning just one of their last four matches.

Aly Ghazal did not have the best day, seeing his compatriot Mohamed Salah exit the Champions League final before putting the ball into his own net in the 26th minute to give the visiting side a 1-0 lead after Cristian Penilla did well to force pressure on the Revolution goal.

The scoreline would stay the same until the half-time interval, however, it would be very different in a matter of minutes. Penilla continued his great match and beat Sean Franklin to the ball and slotted it home to double the Revs lead.

Vancouver would be unphased, as Techera would score two goals over the next three minutes to turn the match completely around. Marcel de Jong played an inviting ball into the box for Techera to pounce on. Techera would exploit the far-post service moments later, banging home his own rebound after a superb cross from Russell Teibert.

New England would only let the match remain tied for less than eight minutes as they forced the Vancouver defence to turn the ball deep in their own third. Diego Fagundez linked up with Teal Bunbury for his sixth goal of the season. Bunbury is on pace to smash his previous career-high of nine goals he set in 2010 with Sporting KC – his second season in the league.

The points would be split, however, as Techera would have the last laugh in the 74th minute. Yordy Reyna would pick out Techera making yet another run to the far post for the game’s final goal.

Both clubs momentarily remain sixth in their respective conferences.
