In the latest of this series ahead of the World Cup in Russia, here is all that you need to know about Australia so you blag your way through a conversation down the pub this summer.
The men from the land down under aren’t just Tim Cahill, not anymore.
Almost single-handedly kept Huddersfield in the Premier League last season. Aaron Mooy is the conductor in this Australia side. Strong in the tackle, intelligent in his reading of the game and creative in attack: this 27-year-old is the kind you want to avoid in the middle of the park. Can his influence alone be enough for the Aussies in this tournament?
Slowly but surely this Australia squad has undergone a generational change. From the likes of Tim Cahill and Lucas Neill, they’ve opted for youth in Russia and Ryan is a key part of that. He was decisive in keeping Brighton in the Premier League and seems to have finally found a home in England after spells in Belgium and Spain.
Bert van Marwijk probably has the strangest job at this summer’s World Cup. He was only appointed after they had already qualified and will leave again once the tournament is over.
“In History’s page let every stage advance Australia fair.”

Having been drawn in the same group as France, Denmark and Peru it’s difficult to see them getting into the latter stages. Perhaps the most they can hope for is one victory.
