What not to miss on World Cup day 11

Oh think twice, ’cause it’s another day for you and me in paradise.

We’ve almost reached the final round of group games at the 2018 World Cup but in groups G and H, there’s still plenty to be decided.

Here’s how Sunday’s looking…

Can England set up a Group G shoot-out with Belgium?

After an untypically humble build-up to the tournament, England fans have allowed themselves to dream of World Cup glory following last week’s win over Tunisia.

Gareth Southgate’s side put in arguably the best opening 20 minutes we’ve seen from anyone at this World Cup but Tunisia’s equaliser from the penalty spot took the wind out of their sails and in the end, they needed a late Harry Kane header to win the game.

But as Germany reminded us on Saturday night, winning is all that matters at this stage and another three points for the Three Lions against Panama will see them through to the last 16, along with Belgium.

After all the furore about Southgate’s line-up being leaked by the media earlier in the week, reports on Sunday suggest Raheem Sterling will keep his place in the side, with Ruben Loftus-Cheek coming in to replace the injured Dele Alli.

Panama shouldn’t be underestimated but if we’re being completely honest, this is a game England really should be looking to win, and perhaps they might even manage to score more than two goals in a 90 minute World Cup match for the first time since 1986.

Belgium were in a frightening form as they thrashed Tunisia 5-2 on Tuesday, and a showdown between the Red Devils and England for top spot in Group G would be a mouth-watering spectacle.

But this is England we’re talking about, and anything can happen.

Will the tightest group at the World Cup get even tighter?

Group H looked interesting on paper before the tournament began and so far, it has not disappointed.

You might have expected Colombia and Poland to be in control of the group at this point, but the first round of matches threw up a couple of surprising results and today’s games will have a big say in who goes through and who goes home.

After they both won their first game, the winner of Japan v Senegal can plant one foot firmly in the last 16, and that would be a decent enough achievement in itself.

Then, in the day’s late kick-off, Poland face Colombia in a game which is an absolute must-win for both sides.

After making it as far as the quarter-final four years ago, Colombia will be bitterly disappointed if they fall at the final hurdle this time around.

Meanwhile, Poland’s tournament is in danger of following a depressingly familiar pattern of previous group stage exits but better was expected from this current group of players.

There’s very little to separate all four teams in this group, and it should be a fascinating evening.

Let’s hope for more scenes like these

The four teams in Group H have provided us with some of the tournaments best stories off the field, and long may it continue.

We’re totally besotted with Senegal’s Aliou Cissé, who is comfortably the most charismatic coach at the tournament.

Whatever Senegal are doing in training, it’s working.

The humility of their supporters is heartwarming too.

These Japan fans are also a credit to their fine country.

And this was a great touch from the travelling Polish contingent last week.

It’s what the World Cup is all about. Great to see.
