West Ham will not follow the lead of some other Premier League clubs in furloughing any non-playing staff.
The declaration was made by the club’s vice-chair, Karren Brady, via social media on Saturday.
Seemingly in response to a tweet by another account, Brady wrote: “FYI All staff at WHU, full and part time have been paid 100% of their wages, ensuring everyone is safe and looked after is our most important priority, regardless of what you think.”
The tweet she was responding to has been deleted.
Liverpool have come in for a torrent of criticism after the runaway Premier League leaders decided to utilise a UK government scheme to help businesses survive the economic crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Former players Jamie Carragher and Didi Hamann were among those who lambasted the Merseysiders’ decision to avail of the government’s offer to cover 80% of furloughed staff’s wages.
Tottenham, Newcastle, Norwich and Bournemouth have also received varying degrees of criticism for signing up to the furlough plan.
