In another example of the financial disparity between the Premier League and the rest of Europe, it is claimed on Friday that West Ham actually beat Bayern Munich to the signing of Sebastien Haller this summer.
Haller joined the Hammers from Eintracht Frankfurt during the off-season, signing for a club-record fee of €50m.
However the east London outfit weren’t the only side sniffing around the 25-year-old.
Frankfurter Rundschau have insisted that Bayern were keen on signing Haller as a back-up option to Robert Lewandowski, having seen him score 15 goals in the Bundesliga last term.
They report though that Bayern baulked at the €50m asking price and opted instead to put that money towards Philippe Coutinho’s wages.
Haller has impressed in his first few games in England, netting three times including a double against Watford.
