Liverpool’s record signing Virgil van Dijk will not make his Premier League debut for the club against Manchester City on Sunday.

The Liverpool Echo have revealed a hamstring injury has sidelined the Dutchman, who is now unlikely to be risked.

After scoring a goal on his debut last weekend to win the Merseyside derby, Van Dijk was expected to start in the Premier League for the first time for the Reds.

City are unbeaten in the Premier League this season and consider Sunday’s trip to Anfield as one of the biggest remaining tests. They haven’t won at the stadium in 15 years.

However, this makes things a little less daunting.

Van Dijk is expected to be replaced by Dejan Lovren, who will line up alongside Joël Matip.

A City win at Anfield would send them 18 points clear at the top of the Premier League after Chelsea dropped points on Saturday afternoon.
