Manchester City legend Vincent Kompany brought an end to his association with the club this summer after 11 years at the Etihad.
After over a decade of success in the north west, he departed for his homeland to take on a player-coach role at Anderlecht.
But as he prepares for his comeback in order to take part in his testimonial, he has opened up on how he did have chances to exit before now and what stopped him leaving.
“I could have ended up at another club,” Kompany acknowledged in a reflective interview with Sky Sports.
“Out of four league titles, I could maybe have turned that into eight, depending on what club you go to and how successful they are.
“But City is a competitive club. It isn’t like you can sit around for a year and wait for what happens.
“Every transfer window, every six months, you are competing with the rest of the world.
“Nobody gives you the gift of staying at City for 11 years. You have to earn it for 11 years.”
The 33-year-old’s Manchester City Legends take on an All Star Premier League XI in Manchester on Wednesday night.
