Victor Lindelöf’s exit from Sweden’s recent match is not as dire as first feared, but still produces a headache for Manchester United.
While initially reported in English as a muscle issue, the Swedish centre back was actually dealing with an illness on Saturday against Turkey.
Lindelöf did not reemerge from the locker room after half-time at the Torku Arena but his manager and team-mates cleared up injury fears. Sweden national team manager Janne Andersson said of the substitution, “Victor did not feel well but he finished the first half.”
Captain Andreas Granqvist spoke to Swedish newspaper SportExpressen about his team-mate. “I think he felt a little bad before the match and felt a bit dizzy when he started.”
“He felt drowsy and without energy and could not continue.”
Lindelöf is a doubt for Sweden’s match against Russia on Tuesday, and José Mourinho will be watching that team sheet eagerly. United’s boss will select a team to face Crystal Palace in the Premier League just four days later on Saturday.
Belgian forward Romelu Lukaku is already a doubt for Manchester United after missing his country’s Nations League match against Switzerland.
With the pressure still on Mourinho in a difficult season, the Red Devils hope to avoid more fitness problems.
The Swedish defender has been one of ever-presents for Mourinho recently, featuring in 11 of the team’s 12 league matches and three of four games in Champions League.
