Argentine striker Maxi López scored the game-winner and added two assists against Chapecoense.

Vasco da Gama created the first chance of the game but forward López fired into side netting in the fifth minute. The first half was largely played through the midfield with neither side carving up the other or generating scoring opportunities.

The home side made the breakthrough in the 54th minute. Wágner quickly trapped a long pass before expertly firing past goalkeeper Jandrei in stride. The winger took one touch to control the entry pass over the top from López and scored with his second.

Shortly after conceding, Chapecoense appeared to equalise through ball-winning midfielder Amaral. Amaral beat goalkeeper Martín Silva to a corner kick but there was a foul earlier in the play and the goal was disallowed.

The visitors did score later on after a scrappy second half. Leandro Pereira headed home a free kick from Héctor Canteros in the 79th minute to tie the game.

With time running out, veteran López took over the game to ensure his team’s victory. The Argentine forward received a pass from Andrey, danced outside the Chapecoense penalty area, and fired low across Jandrei in the 85th minute.

López then served up a long ball for Thiago Galhardo to drive into the 18-yard box and finish past Jandrei in stoppage time to seal the result for Vasco.

On a night when Vasco da Gama honored the team that lifted the Copa Libertadores in 1998, Maxi López ensured their fans had something new to celebrate.

The late win moves the Cruzmaltino to 24 points, good enough for 13th place but with two games in hand. On 21 points, Chapecoense now sits dangerously close to the relegation zone in 17th place.
