VAR may be introduced in the Superliga Argentina next year | OneFootball

Claudio Fabián Tapia, president of the Argentine Football Association, has revealed that evaluations are underway to implement Video Assistant Refereeing for the 2019-20 Superliga Argentina season.

While VAR was initially met with suspicion in some quarters of the footballing world has since been widely adopted. The A-League, Major League Soccer, Serie A, and Bundesliga have begun using VAR and the technology was also on display during the 2018 World Cup and the most recent Copa Libertadores tournament.

Despite widespread use, the specifics of any particular system are not free from controversy.

Tapia spoke in a year-end video published on the AFA’s official YouTube channel, teasing the implementation of VAR. “We have the economic capacity to start developing it from next season.”

“Technology in officiating is something that ought to be developed. I am among those who think that if VAR is used to correct errors or injustices, is it good. Taking into account that the protagonists always have to be the referee together with the players, as they are the ones who produce the spectacle.”

Improved economic management of the federation, the national team project, and renovations at the Ezeiza Housing Complex, were among other topics that Tapia discussed during his casual address. The federation president also pledged more development for the women’s game in Argentina.
