United States goalkeeper Brad Guzan says he doesn’t feel bad about denying Wayne Rooney a fairytale ending to his England career.

Rooney came off the bench in the second half to earn his 120th international cap as Gareth Southgate’s side ran out 3-0 winners at Wembley on Thursday.

Goals from Jesse Lingard, Trent Alexander-Arnold and debutant Callum Wilson gave the Three Lions the victory over the USMNT but despite his best efforts, Rooney was unable to get in on the goalscoring fun.

And speaking after the game, Guzan says there was a concerted effort from England’s players to get the nation’s all-time leading goalscorer one more for the road.

“I was saying to our defenders that obviously they were trying to get him to score, so we had to get close to him,” the Atlanta United ‘keeper told ESPN.

“It was as clear as day that they wanted him to score, so I said that to one of our centre-backs and he turned around and said, ‘I know they’re trying.'”

Rooney did have a decent chance to score in the dying minutes only to be thwarted by Guzan, and the former Aston Villa and Middlesbrough custodian insists he feels no guilt about it whatsoever.

“Listen, you’re not thinking about things like that, you’re just trying to keep the score as low as possible,” he added.

“You laugh and joke about it afterwards but in the midst of the game you’re not really thinking about it. You’re just trying to keep the ball out.”
