A radical plan is on the table at Uefa to truncate the Champions League and Europa League by playing a ‘Final Four’ type competition in Istanbul over one weekend.

That’s according to a story in the Telegraph which claims that European football’s governing body are leaning towards playing the final two rounds of this season’s European competitions in the space of a few days later this year.

It would be similar to the Nations League, where last year England, Netherlands, Portugal and Switzerland competed in the first ever finals.

The recent coronavirus pandemic has halted football for the time being and on Tuesday Uefa president, Aleksander Čeferin, will sit down with delegates from 55 nations to try and come up with a plan as to how they can finish the European season.

So far, this option is reportedly leading the way, with Uefa also expected to announce that the quarter-finals of both competitions will be played over just one leg with the team drawn first being at home.

The Champions League and Europa League semi-finals would also be one-legged affairs, with the Champions League to take place in Istanbul and the Europa League matches played in Gdansk.

Uefa are also expected to confirm that Euro 2020 will be pushed back to November and December or next summer.
