VAR takes centre stage in Madrid

It was the VAR show yet again in Europe as Real Madrid drew 2-2 with Paris Saint-Germain at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Los Blancos dominated the early stages and found themselves ahead through Karim Benzema, who finished the scraps after Isco hit the post.

Then drama arrived. Mauro Icardi went through on goal and was fouled by Thibaut Courtois, with the referee giving a penalty and sending off the Belgian.

But upon further review, the penalty was withdrawn and a foul was given against PSG for miniscule foul on Marcelo from Idrissa Gueye earlier on.

Karim Benzema looked to put the game beyond doubt with a well taken header, before a defensive mix-up between Raphaël Varane and Courtois allowed Kylian Mbappé to half the deficit.

Former Real Madrid player Pablo Sarabia then levelled the score with a beautifully taken strike, stunning the home faithful.

Gareth Bale hit the post in injury time to increase the madness – but full-time eventually saw the points being shared.

Mourinho maintains winning streak

It was another goal-crazy game for Tottenham after they came from 2-0 down to beat Olympiakos 4-2 in north London.

Youssef El-Arabi stunned the hosts with a clinical long-range strike on six minutes, even if Paulo Gazzaniga could have done better.

Rúben Semedo added a second shortly after, pouncing on some awful Spurs defending to tap home from a corner.

But Spurs were gifted a route back into the game before half-time with Dele Alli pouncing on a defensive howler from Yassine Meriah.

Harry Kane levelled proceedings shortly after the break, finishing a smart cutback from Lucas Moura.

It was an unlikely scorer who eventually secured the win for Spurs, hammering a perfect half-volley past Jose Sá in goal.

Kane added a fourth late on to keep the feel-good factor high under Mourinho.

Juventus gain Group D control

Juventus edged a tight affair 1-0 against Atlético Madrid to finally wrestle control of Group D.

Just three points separated the sides going into the match, and tensions were high with neither side creating much of note.

But a stunning free-kick from Paulo Dybala put the Bianconeri ahead after flying past Jan Oblak from an almost impossible angle.

Álvaro Morata had the chance to level the score late on, but he somehow couldn’t sort his feet out to tap home from three yards.

This was far from a classic, but Maurizio Sarri won’t mind. Diego Simeone heads back to the drawing board.

Flick finds the formula

Bayern Munich continued their winning run under Hansi Flick after breezing past Crvena Zvezda 6-0 in Belgrade.

The Bundesliga champions went ahead through Leon Goretzka who netted a brilliant header, making it four goals in four games for club and country.

Then Lewandowski decided to turn up.

After having a goal disallowed for handball, he scored four goals in 14 minutes after the break – making it the quickest quadruple in Champions League history.

Corentin Tolisso added a sixth late on and Bayern look to have their groove back.

Lacklustre City struggle at home

Manchester City limped their way to a disappointing 1-1 draw against Shakhtar Donetsk at the Etihad Stadium.

Despite fielding a strong side, the hosts struggled to get going but finally took the lead after half-time.

Clever play from Gabriel Jesus saw Ilkay Gündogan follow in late and slot home past some desperate defensive lunges.

However, Shakhtar equalised through Manor Solomon with a well worked goal of their own, subduing the atmosphere in Manchester completely.

City have secured top spot regardless but Pep Guardiola will be far from pleased with his side’s efforts.

Nerazzurri hang onto progression hopes

Atalanta kept their Champions League qualification hopes alive after beating Dinamo Zagreb 2-0 in Bergamo.

The Serie A side went ahead through Luis Muriel, who made no mistake from 12 yards after being fouled by Dino Perić.

Following wave after wave of Nerazzurri attack, Papu Gómez doubled their lead with a piece of individual brilliance, capping a complete performance again for Atalanta.

Gian Piero Gasperini’s side remain bottom of Group C – but mathematically they are still very much alive.
