Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Mousa Dembélé has unearthed £1 million worth of lost treasure in the basement of a hotel he is set to open in his hometown.

The Belgian international will next year turn a 700-year-old building in Antwerp into a hotel called De Gulde Schoen (The Golden Shoe) but before renovation work began, archaeologists discovered a cache of extremely valuable 18th century porcelain, glass, pottery and tableware.

To add to the mystery, the area where the items had seemingly been hidden was not listed on the building’s plans.

“We found the items in a closed-off area in the cellar. It was pure chance, as the space did not match the building plan,” archaeologist Tim Bellens told The Sun.

“The Dembélé family want to build a spa and swimming pool in the basement, and invited us to look at it first.

“It is unclear why and how the items got there, but maybe it was stuff the owners wanted to get rid of.

“The building seems to have been a high-class tavern or hotel in the past.”

Some of the items will be displayed in the hotel when it opens while others will be sold to museums.

“This is something unique, and it fits perfectly with the building’s historic past,” added Dembélé’s sister Assita.

30-year-old Dembélé will be hoping Spurs are able to salvage a valuable three points when they travel to face Manchester City on Saturday evening.
