Ajax have reportedly rejected a €40m (£35m) bid from Tottenham Hotspur for defender Davinson Sánchez.
The 21-year-old excelled last season after joining the Dutch giants for just £5m.
Sánchez’s performances have attracted interest from Barcelona and Real Madrid but it is Spurs – who are yet to make a signing this summer – who have made the most concrete approach.
However, Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf say Tottenham’s mega bid has been rejected.
“Ajax has made Davinson a top offer for a new contract,” said sporting director Marc Overmars.
Sánchez was integral last season as Ajax earned a place in the Europa League final, where they lost to Manchester United. The defender’s current contract ends in 2021 but Ajax are hoping he will extend for a further year for a much bigger wage and remain in Amsterdam for at least one more season.
It’s hard to imagine Ajax rejecting a €40m and holding out for long but the pressure is on Spurs to make a move with the season underway this weekend.
