Pochettino: Spurs need new stadium to become a force in Europe

Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino believes they’re on the right path to become “one of the biggest clubs in Europe” but need the “stability” of their own home ground to achieve such success.

According to the Argentine, Spurs’ provisional home at Wembley this season is a factor to strongly consider in the team not being able to reach the next level.

“This season, it’s Wembley and we feel very good, but all of the stress at the beginning, always we are going to pay for this,” Pochettino told reporters.

“For our fans, for everyone, the process will start next season, start to feel like a home in the new stadium.”

Last Wednesday, the Lilywhites were eliminated from the Champions League at the hands of Juventus – a tough defeat to take considering their 3-2 aggregate lead going into the last 45 minutes of the two-legged tie.

In Pochettino’s mind, this isn’t an excuse, but it might have been a different story if they had still been at the storied White Hart Lane.

“That’s not an excuse, that is the reality and when we assess the team, we cannot put [leave] this out. We need to include this situation,” he added.

Tottenham will be on the move again this summer when the club’s new 62,000 capacity stadium is ready to open to the public.

In the meantime, Spurs are doing everything else mentally and football-wise to be in Europe’s elite.

“They try to play football, [with a] philosophy like a big club. They try to dominate,” Pochettino said.

“Always against the big teams, they make very big performances.”
