Tottenham have taken up an option to extend Toby Alderweireld’s contract by a further year.

Mauricio Pochettino confirmed the news in a press conference on Thursday.

The Belgian defender is now tied to the club until 2020 but could still leave the club in the summer.

By taking up the option to extend the contract by 12 months, Tottenham have now triggered a clause saying Alderweireld could leave the club for just £25m (€28m) in the summer as long as an offer is received before the final two weeks of the window.

The defender was looking to leave the club before the season, with Manchester United and PSG both linked with him.

He could now depart in the summer as long as a club makes a sufficient bid, with Tottenham unable to reject offers which meet the release clause.

A breakdown in talks to sign a new contract saw Alderweireld dropped earlier this season.

The 29-year-old has, though, worked his way back into favour and made 17 Premier League starts this season.
