Prior to a big Champions League game, all Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld wanted was an early night.
But he didn’t quite get that.
Spurs served up a thriller with Manchester City on Wednesday night in which they advanced on away goals.
The night before at the team hotel, the defender struggled to sleep as goalkeeper Michel Vorm enjoyed Ajax’s triumph in Turin.
“Some of the lads wanted to watch Barcelona-Manchester United but we didn’t agree,” he told Het Laatste Nieuws.
“We preferred to watch Juve-Ajax. After it went 1-1, I went to my room.
“I wanted an early night. But then I heard Vorm screaming like a fool!
“So I checked LiveScore. Ajax had beaten Juve, can you believe it?”
Ajax’s victory will allow Alderweireld to enjoy a reunion against his former club, who brought him through their famed youth academy.
