Bayern Munich’s interest in Chelsea youngster Callum Hudson-Odoi was one of the worst kept secrets in football last January.

The Bundesliga giants had three bids rejected for the 18-year-old at the start of the year and are also understood to have made another attempt to sign him this summer despite the fact he is still sidelined with a ruptured Achilles’ tendon.

However, according to a report by The Athletic, Hudson-Odoi would have been happy to have joined Bayern and even agreed personal terms with the Bavarians before the transfer broke down.

But Bayern were either unable or unwilling to strike a satisfactory deal with Chelsea (their fourth and final bid was believed to be in the region of €25m) and sporting director Hasan Salihamidžić admits he has some regrets about how things turned out.

“There were reasons why we pursued the transfer this way,” Salihamidžić told The Athletic.

“But I’m self-critical enough to admit that we could have handled it better.”

Hudson-Odoi is yet to feature under Frank Lampard this season due to injury but the winger is reportedly poised to sign a new five-year £100,000-a-week contract and is therefore unlikely to be leaving Stamford Bridge anytime soon.

And after a move for Manchester City’s Leroy Sané also broke down, Bayern eventually ended up signing Ivan Perišić on a season-long loan deal from Inter.
