After Brazil’s embarrassing 7-1 defeat to Germany in 2014, Thiago Silva wants to use that pain as motivation to kick on in Russia.

“Each day you learn something new. Professionally, personally and even emotionally, because the emotional aspect is so important,” Thiago Silva told Goal.

“Many times we try to change it, but we can’t. Me personally I don’t want to change it, I’d rather that all happens naturally. Things happened, good or bad, but naturally. We have to learn that not everyone deserves our tears. You have to do the right thing even if someone mocks you.

“I rarely change my opinion about what I believe, but the learning is huge after all that happened since 2014. We hope that 2018 may be different for Thiago Silva in the Brazil national team.

“Our final goal is to be the world champions, but there’s a long road ahead to play a great World Cup and finish it the best way possible: with the trophy.”

Thiago Silva has accumulated 70 caps for the Seleção and still gets chills every time he puts on their uniform.

“It’s different. This is a unique moment. Not every player could wear this jersey,” he said.

“Many have the talent to play here, what makes the competition even harder, so you have to do something extra to wear this kit.

“There’s history, a responsibility in these five stars, so you always have to do something extra for the over 200 million people in Brazil. Each day we go to our limit to honour it.”

Silva looked back fondly on his time in the streets as a child, playing barefoot and watching his nation lift the World Cup trophy in the United States.

“The first thing that comes to mind is the 1994 World Cup” Thiago Silva admits.

“We had an amazing attacking duo with Bebeto and Romario. The final match is a strong memory when Roberto Baggio missed that penalty kick. That’s a memory that is part of my childhood.

“I remember I’d be playing in the streets with friends, sometimes barefooted. I’d come home with sore feet, but wanting to do the same the day after.

“That passion made us keep playing. Playing in the dirt was our daily joy.”
