Although Chelsea have known for some time that they would be on the lookout for a new manager this summer, they have yet to appoint one.

Maurizio Sarri left for Juventus last weekend but the Blues were aware prior to that point that he would exit after one season.

Frank Lampard has been identified as the man Chelsea want to bring back to the club after impressing with Derby County.

However, they have yet to make the announcement many have been anticipating since Sarri left to return to Italy.

Express Sport report that the reason for the hold up is Derby’s refusal to let Lampard leave until a replacement is found.

They had a tentative approach for Rangers boss Steven Gerrard swiftly knocked back earlier this week, while other candidates took on other jobs.

Lampard’s fellow Chelsea legend John Terry agreed a new deal at Aston Villa, while Lee Bowyer performed a sensational u-turn to stay on at Charlton Athletic.

It leaves the Rams looking elsewhere, and quickly, as they aim to bring a replacement for Lampard to Pride Park.

Their current manager has made it clear that he would like the opportunity to return to Stamford Bridge and take the top job at his old club.

In his solitary season in the dugout, the former England international led Derby to a play-off final appearance, where they were beaten by Aston Villa.
