The Great Debate: Which league is the best in Europe at the moment?

Liverpool’s victory over Manchester United on Sunday saw them go 16 points clear at the top of the table.

The Premier League has often been lauded as the best and/or most competitive league in the world, but this season’s one horse race would perhaps suggest otherwise.

So which is the best league to watch in Europe this season? Our writers have their say …

Everyone knows I love the Bundesliga and that I’m biased. So, I’m going to say the Bundesliga.

The German top flight has offered up the most goals per game across Europe’s top leagues this season, Bayern Munich are four points from the top, and just nine points separate the entire top six.

At the other end of the table, just six points separate seven sides from the relegation play-off place upwards. Beste Liga der Welt!

Unlike the rest of these hipsters, I’m gonna come out to bat for the good old English Premier League.

Yes the title race has been a foregone conclusion for months this season and yes, about 12 of the 20 teams are white hot trash, but it’s still the most alluring league around if you ask me.

It’s become a massive cliche but it does genuinely feel like anyone can beat anyone in the Premier League (except Liverpool, who nobody can beat) and it regularly throws up absolute scenes, like we saw at Stamford Bridge, Goodison Park and Villa Park on Tuesday night.

The two best coaches in the world are in the Premier League and their teams alone are worth tuning in for each week. Even the VAR nonsense is becoming more and more amusing as the season wears on.

You can say what you like about the Premier League, but you can’t say it isn’t Barclays.

In the spirit of variety, I’ll go for Ligue 1.

Paris Saint-Germain hold a pretty strong monopoly in terms of recent title wins, but talent is oozing out from this division wherever you look.

If you’re after a bargain or looking to mould a rough diamond into something special – then look no further.

I’m going to have to echo Dan’s choice here, the Premier League just has to be the best in Europe.

Yes Liverpool are running away with the title, but this will be the first time they would have won it in 30 years and during the last 10 years, only Manchester City managed to win back-to-back titles – not like the same team winning it over and over again in the rest of Europe.

The coaches are some of the best in the world, likewise with the players (aside from LaLiga maybe) and as for entertainment value; unexpected victories, VAR confusion and a complete disruption of the top six this year make it number one choice for me.

My answer is the same as it would be every single season: it’s the Championship.

A proper title race between West Brom and Leeds looks almost certain to go down to the wire, while who takes the four play-off places come the end of the campaign is anyone’s guess.

It’s a hoary old cliche but any side can genuinely beat any other and that makes it unmissable.

I will always bang the drum for Serie A.

After one of the most dramatic title races in recent times between Juventus and Napoli in 2018, we have another brewing with Inter and Lazio set to push Juve all the way.

Lazio have one of the most lethal strikers in Europe in Ciro Immobile (23 goals all competitions), while Inter’s January business screams of a side with ambition. Watch this space.

In terms of which league is the best to watch, it is Serie A or the Bundesliga but if you’re asking which is the most exciting, look no further than the north of Ireland’s Premiership.

After (mostly) 25 games, there are incredibly just three points separating the top five in the table!

Oh and if you need any further convincing, this is the division that provided us with arguably the goal of 2019 too.
