Some people find Manchester City boring. The way they dominate games, the way they keep the ball, the fact they picked up 100 points last season. I actually think it’s pretty fascinating.

And the recovery of Benjamin Mendy was, theoretically, supposed to see them get even better. But he got injured again.

In nine Premier League appearances this season, the left-back has an amazing five assists. Manchester City won 23 of a possible 27 points from the matches he played, scoring 26 times and conceding just six.

But Mendy has already had a foot injury this season and then needed surgery on his left knee. He’s just returned to training and will hopefully he’ll stay fit now but a part of me is wondering just how good City could have been over the last 18 months if he had stayed fit.

Unfortunately, we may never know.

It’s Everton, again, in their long-standing, ambitious pursuit of breaking the top six monopoly and beyond.

Again, they appointed a new manager, again they spent heavily in a bid to try and ease the mess of the last transfer window and, again, it has all unravelled.

The Toffees appeared to have bought smartly under Marco Silva and splashed the cash when they needed to in order to prise Richarlison from Watford.

In November, they were above faltering Manchester United, well in touch with the side’s ahead of them and had a clear path to their objective.

However, their annual dose of misery and bad luck at Anfield struck and from there, a dour run of form stretching two months has been spawned, lumbering the Toffees slap bang in the middle of the Premier League’s also rans.

Perhaps that is this team’s level, perhaps not, but oh the disappointment continues to swell for Evertonians. There is always next season.

I tipped Fulham to finish in the top eight of the Premier League at the start of the season and boy, do I feel silly right now.

What looked like a really impressive summer transfer window has left them with a bloated and unbalanced squad and they’ve been an absolute shambles defensively, having already conceded 51 goals in 23 games this season.

It wasn’t long ago that most of Europe’s top clubs were sniffing around Jean Michaël Seri but he’s flattered to deceive since his move to the Premier League and has arguably been the most disappointing aspect of the Cottagers’ season so far.

It makes you wonder how they would have fared if they had just trusted in the players who performed so well in the Championship last season.

They can’t have done much worse, surely?

It may seem a slightly obvious one, but I’m disappointed that there has been no challenger to the league’s top six positions.

Bournemouth’s early form was a brief flash in the pan but other than that there has been no real contender. Last season Burnley bought some much needed hope for the other 14 in the Premier League, but even then they tailed off and finished 9 points off Arsenal.

This year I expected more from Everton, West Ham and maybe even Palace, but after 23 games and with the gap from 6th to 7th currently standing at 11 points, I can only see the distance widening in the next few years, especially with the funds available to the top teams.

Oh Mesut, it hurts to say this, it really does but it’s you.

But … well … it’s not your fault, we are not saying that, please don’t think that … but well, have you tried talking to him? Have you worked really hard in training?

Maybe you could even track back a bit?

Or maybe if he just knew you like we know you, then he’d change his mind? And you’d play and all would be right with world.

But until then, it hurts to say this, it really does but it’s you.

It was always going to be a period of change at Real Madrid this season but the way in which they totally capitulated under Julen Lopetegui earlier in the campaign was beyond a joke.

Even with their talismanic coach out the door and their record-breaking goalscorer off to Juventus, this Real Madrid squad should have been good enough to compete with Barcelona at the top of LaLiga.

Instead, they’ve lost to the likes of Alavés, Eibar and CSKA Moscow.

It couldn’t have happened to a nicer club.
