The Premier League may have been short on games this weekend but it certainly wasn’t short on drama.

Here’s what we made of an enthralling few games.

Raising eyebrows

Carlo Ancelotti’s arrival at Everton was a blockbuster move that promised a lot, but surely no one expected it to go this well this quickly?

Since replacing Marco Silva in December the Toffees have won five, drawn three and lost three, putting them second in the form table.

They backed up their come-from-behind victory against Watford last time out with another three points at home to Crystal Palace on Saturday.

A more routine win you’ll never never likely see, and perhaps that’s the most impressive thing – just how routine it was.

Palace are no mugs away from home but were made to look thoroughly average by an Everton team who are back playing with smiles on their faces.

Forza Carlo!

They can’t, can they?

You would have been ridiculed at the start of the season for suggesting that Sheffield United could finish the season in a Europa League place.

Chris Wilder’s side look like they might go one better than that finish in the top four.

Their win over Bournemouth on Sunday won’t go down as one of the Premier League’s greatest ever performances, but it was everything that the Blades are all about – a steely determination, a never-say-die attitude, and a clinical nature in the final third.

With Chelsea stuttering and Manchester United being Manchester United, who would bet against the Yorkshire completing mission impossible this season?

Bad 😕

Awful game, wrong division

Without trying to make fans of Brighton and Watford too irate, we had just one question after watching their clash on Saturday afternoon: how on earth was that a Premier League game?

Like watching two drunks having a fight outside your local, this was amusing to begin with and then became tragic beyond belief.

Two teams playing sub-optimal football in an identikit new stadium in an appalling atmosphere.

Contrast that to Nottingham Forest vs Leeds at the same time, and I know which game I’d prefer to see in the top division next season.

Ugly 👹

Storm’s brewing

Storm Ciara put paid to Manchester City’s clash with West Ham on Sunday meaning that Pep Guardiola’s side missed their chance to cut Liverpool’s remarkable 22 point lead at the top of the Premier League.

It also means that the reigning champions will have to do without any fixtures for 20 days, with their next game against Leicester taking place on February 22.

You can already hear the excuses Guardiola will be making.
