Every club in world football is looking for the next best thing.
And with the season now in full swing, some young players are already shining in their respective leagues.
Here are our top five Under-23 performances from the weekend …
Callum Hudson-Odoi was brilliant for Chelsea against Newcastle, completing 85% of his passes, five dribbles and making four ball recoveries.
He also became the second youngest player in Premier League history (18y 346d) to assist in three consecutive appearances, behind only Michael Owen (18y 27d).
Talk about settling back in.
After starting the season with just one goal in four games, Lautaro Martínez made it four in his next four after scoring twice against Sassuolo.
El Toro has already proven his worth as a finisher, but it’s his all round game – pressing, running the channels, link up – that will impress Antonio Conte.
Finding his feet.
Martin Ødegaard put in another brilliant display for Real Sociedad, helping put Real Betis to the sword at Anoeta.
The 20-year-old thrives on full attacking responsibility and his outrageous scooped pass helped Portu put the game beyond doubt.
We’re starting the fan club.
William Saliba put in another monstrous performance as Saint-Étienne edged past Bordeaux on Sunday.
Playing on the right side of a back three, he made three interceptions, four tackles and won all five of his aerial duels.
Arsenal have got themselves a gem.
Christian Pulisic might be struggling at Chelsea, but Josh Sargent is enjoying a breakthrough season for Werder Bremen.
The 18-year-old bagged his second goal of the season against Hertha on Saturday, highlighting his speed and movement in behind.
Keep an eye on him.
