If the Bundesliga season ended right now, it would be one of the most shocking in history. Bayern Munich are sixth, Schalke are languishing just above the relegation zone, and the top five contains Werder Bremen and Hertha BSC.

The season obviously isn’t finishing now but that can’t stop us from making a team of the season so far.

With seven games – around 20% – of the season over, who’s impressed us most so far?

GK: Roman BĂŒrki (Dortmund)

BĂŒrki has arguably been Dortmund’s best player. The Swiss was widely criticised last season but has made a crucial save in almost every match so far this year and deserves his spot (as well a few apologies).

RB: Theodor Gebre Selassie (Bremen)

Always reliable, Gebre Selassie is a fine defender. The 31-year-old may not grab headlines but he is positionally excellent and reads the game well. So far this season, the ever-present defender has excelled.

CB: Nico Elvedi (Gladbach)

The Bundesliga has had no stand-out defenders so far but few have been as solid as Elvedi. The Swiss is as solid as he is excellent on the ball.

CB: Matthias Ginter (Gladbach)

Alongside Elvedi, Ginter has shone. The German is strong in the air and excellent on the ground. His career renaissance goes on.

LB: Philipp Max (Augsburg)

One of the most under-rated players in European football. Max is a solid defender and a huge threat from left-back. No player has created more chances than Max (18) so far this season, and he’s scored twice already as well.

RM: Jadon Sancho (Dortmund)

Jadon Sancho was really close to not making this team as he has made just one start. However, he’s provided assists in five different Bundesliga matches and that can’t be overlooked. One goal and six assists in 215 Bundesliga minutes, the 18-year-old is something special.

CM: Kevin Kampl (RB Leipzig)

People thought Leipzig would miss Naby KeĂŻta. Try again. Kampl has been at his all-action best, pressing furiously and creating plenty for his team-mates. If he continues in that way, Leipzig will be heading back to the Champions League.

CM: Thiago AlcĂąntara (Bayern)

Bayern Munich may have been disappointing lately but Thiago is one player who has impressed. Played in a deeper role under new boss Niko Kovač, the multi-faceted midfielder has shown his best form. Whatever problems the Bundesliga champions have, they don’t lie with Thiago.

LM: JavairĂŽ Dilrosun (Hertha BSC)

Having left Manchester City for free in the summer, Dilrosun is turning into the surprise of the season. As well as two goals, Dilrosun has three assists and a couple of top class performances. One to watch.

AM: Marco Reus (Dortmund)

He is on top form. Marco Reus has been a pleasure to watch in recent weeks after finding his place in Lucien Favre’s team. The Dortmund skipper is the team’s talisman and his eye for goal is central to their form.

ST: Alassane Pléa (Gladbach)

Signing of the summer? We think he might be. Pléa has hit the ground running in Germany, scoring five times in the Bundesliga already, including a beauty at Bayern Munich. The big French forward looks a bit special.

Bench:

Rune Jarstein (Hertha BSC), Moussa Niakhaté (Mainz 05), Joshua Kimmich (Bayern Munich), Davy Klassen (Werder Bremen), Ondrej Duda (Hertha BSC), Michael Gregoritsch (FC Augsburg), Paco Alcåcer (Borussia Dortmund)
