Uefa have opened an investigation into Bayern Munich after Leon Goretzka wore a Bundesliga jersey in the Champions League last week.

Goretzka came off the bench in the 72nd minute of the 3-1 home defeat to Liverpool and as the above photograph shows, the midfielder was wearing a shirt with the Bundesliga patches on the sleeves rather than the Champions League version.

According to German outlet Abendzeitung, the reason this is a problem for European football’s governing body is because Bayern’s Bundesliga jersey also features the Qatar Airways sponsors logo on the sleeves and Champions League rules prevent clubs from displaying more than one sponsor on their shirt when playing the competition.

Champions League jerseys are also supposed to display the Champions League logo on one sleeve and Uefa’s Respect logo on the other.

But strangely, the jersey Goretzka was wearing featured his name at the top of the back, whereas their Bundesliga jerseys usually have ‘FC Bayern München’ at the top with the name at the bottom.

The worst punishment the German champions can probably expect to receive for this faux pas is a nominal fine and all will be decided when Uefa’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Committee next meet on 16 May.
