On Sunday, Club América won their first title in four years and their 13th title overall with a 2-0 win over Cruz Azul in the second leg of the Liguilla final.

América and Cruz Azul each boast three players in our team of the season, while Pumas, Tigres, Santos Laguna, Monterrey, and Pachuca each have one player in our XI.

Goalkeeper

Agustín Marchesín (América) was the most consistent goalkeeper of the season, making several highlight-reel saves and not making many mistakes. His performances were so good that many have called for Marchesín to become Argentina’s number one goalkeeper.

Defenders

Pablo Aguilar (Cruz Azul) was fantastic on both sides of the ball and provided a great contribution to the attack.

Bruno Valdez (América) scored a whopping seven goals this season from the back and was a huge part in leading the league’s second-best defence.

Alan Mozo (Pumas) is only 21, but he was one of the best two-way defenders in the entire league. He started all but two matches for Pumas this season.

Adrián Aldrete (Cruz Azul) was easily the best left-back in the league, providing four assists and scoring a goal.

Midfielders

Guido Rodríguez (América) was, for many, the best player in the tournament. He was a true engine in the heart of the midfield, scoring five goals and contributing an assist from the defensive midfield position while playing every single minute this season.

Víctor Guzmán (Pachuca) had a very memorable campaign, as he was called up to the Mexican national team for the first time, earning four caps.

Though Pachuca didn’t qualify for the Liguilla, Guzmán was tremendous, scoring nine goals and adding five assists in 16 appearances.

Elías Hernández (Cruz Azul) was second in Liga MX with seven assists in addition to his six goals.

Dorlan Pabón (Monterrey) was the leader for the Rayados, distributing a whopping 10 assists in 19 matches in addition to a pair of goals.

Strikers

André Pierre Gignac (Tigres) was the scoring leader and continued to prove that winters are his thing. His 14 goals and two assists in 16 regular season games has convinced many that he should replace Olivier Giroud up front for Euro 2020.

However, Gignac went scoreless in two Liguilla contests as Tigres were stunned by Pumas in the quarter-finals.

Julio Furch (Santos Laguna) proved once again that he’s one of the best players in Mexico, scoring 12 goals and contributing five assists this season.

It will be interesting to see whether or not Tata Martino will think about adding the Argentinian-born Furch to the Mexican squad when he is eligible to play for El Tri in 2020.

He is currently 29 years old and can provide height and strength up front – something that El Tri severely lacks.
