Sunderland have reportedly began discussions with former Bolton boss Phil Parkinson over the vacant manager’s position.
Jack Ross was given his marching orders earlier this week after 18 months at the Stadium of Light, with the Black Cats sitting in ninth position in League One.
A number of candidates have emerged for the post, including Nigel Pearson, Gareth Ainsworth and Daniel Stendel.
However the Sun claim that Parkinson is now the front-runner for the job, and will sit down with owner Stewart Donald this weekend for initial talks.
Sunderland are back in action next weekend when they travel to an Ainsworth-led Wycombe.
