Stoke City are ready to make a club-record £20m bid for West Brom loan star Dwight Gayle.

With the Newcastle ownership and managerial situations unclear, Gayle is unaware of his standing at the club and is considering a move elsewhere this summer.

Chronicle Live’s Newcastle reporter Lee Ryder said: “Gayle is understood to be pondering his future following the completion of his successful loan stint at West Brom.

“He has been told to report back to Benton on 4 July for pre-season training. And even though that is just a fortnight away, Gayle and his team-mates are still uncertain about who will be the manager and whether they are wanted next term.

“Gayle has been linked with a £20m move to ambitious Stoke in recent days, and Newcastle would surely consider such a big offer for the man they paid £10m for in 2016.

“With Solomon Rondon’s next move still to be determined, Gayle could get a chance to lead the line for Newcastle in pre-season.

“He lost the number nine shirt to Rondon last summer but would almost certainly get the chance to play in pre-season due to the reduced squad size as Newcastle are yet to sign a player so far in the transfer window.”

The 28-year-old has put in his share of subpar performances for Newcastle since moving from Crystal Palace three years ago, which saw him axed from Rafa Benitez’s side and shipped off to the Baggies this past season.

However, the striker responded and proved his quality in the Championship, scoring 24 goals in 41 games as West Brom reached the promotion play-offs.
