Alfredo Morelos has been rumoured to be the subject of a very large incoming bid from Eintracht Frankfurt, but Rangers boss Steven Gerrard isn’t having it at the moment.

The Colombian bagged a hat-trick in ‘Gers 6-0 win over Gibraltar outfit St. Joseph’s while fellow striker Jermain Defoe came off the bench to bag a brace in his 23-minute cameo.

While the two will be battling for minutes, Gerrard believes both men will have a role to play this season.

“We hope it’s a huge season ahead for him. Alfredo is a top, top striker. He got a bit of a niggle in pre-season, which set him back a little bit, but he has been in full training for quite a while now and is looking better each day.

“The hat-trick will do his confidence the world of good. It’s great to have two top number nines to pick from.

“Alfredo and Jermain Defoe will both want to play every minute of every game, but it’s not realistic to ask a player to play Thursday-Sunday all the way to Christmas if we have a strong European run.

“Both players are experienced and bright enough to realise that it’s about the squad and not about any one individual.

“One is young at 23 and one is 36, so they are at different ends of their career. But one thing’s for sure – they have both got an awful lot to offer this team and squad over the next 12 months.

“The most important thing for me is they both stay fit, healthy and available for selection.”

After Sunday’s Blackburn friendly, Rangers will take on Luxembourg side Progrès Niederkorn on Thursday in their Europa League second qualifying round tie.

Progrès Niederkorn famously eliminated Rangers in Europa League qualifiers two seasons ago in what many supporters say was the worst result in the club’s history.
