Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has revealed the similarities between the Old Firm Derby and its Merseyside equivalent in a wide-ranging interview with France Football.

The former Liverpool and England midfielder is halfway through his first season in club management and has guided Rangers to third in the Scottish Premier League and to within touching distance of qualification in their Europa League campaign.

Gerrard has already been on the touchline for one derby against Celtic, and the 38-year-old has admitted that his experiences versus Everton as a player have stood him in good stead.

“It’s similar, but the atmosphere is different too,” he said.

“There is a religious and political context here that gives the derby another dimension. It’s complicated to explain. You have to live it to understand it.

“On the day, it’s only that which exists. It seems that life stops in Glasgow.”

Many expect Gerrard to one day take the reins at Anfield and go from Reds playing legend to manager.

And the man himself has refused to rule out that possibility.

“Today, I am very happy to be at Rangers and happy to do this job. I want to give the best of myself for Rangers. But nobody knows the future… Liverpool is a very special place for me. One day, maybe it will happen… or not.”
