Steve Bruce was involved in a car chase down the motorway after Joe Bryan rejected Aston Villa to sign for Fulham on Wednesday night.

At least, that’s according to a WhatsApp screenshot from an unknown sender shared by the ‘Quickly Kevin, will he score?’ podcast.

Apparently, Bryan was all set to join Villa from Bristol City and even signed a contract with the Midlands club, only for Fulham to come in with a £6m bid at the eleventh hour.

The 24-year-old decided he’d quite fancy a bit of Premier League football this season, and headed off in the direction of Craven Cottage.

But what he didn’t account for was Villans boss Bruce, who is said to have set off in hot pursuit down the M40 in a desperate attempt to change the left-back’s mind.

We have no idea whether this is true or not and frankly, we couldn’t care less. It conjures up some hilarious mental images, especially if you’re familiar with Bruce’s series of crime novels ‘Striker!’, ‘Sweeper!’ and, of course, ‘Defender!’ (Google it if you aren’t).

This tale has also produced some cracking memes …

If Fulham do want to sign Bryan, the word on the street is that they will now have to sign him from Villa due to the amount of paperwork that has already been done.

And this wouldn’t be the first time Villa have missed out on a left-back in similar circumstances.

In 1998, David Unsworth moved to Villa Park from West Ham but after being unable to settle in Birmingham, he was sold to Everton just a month later without having made a single appearance.
