Steve Bruce has confirmed the rumours that Newcastle are interested in Ademola Lookman but says a deal for the winger is “a bit far off”.
Lookman has played just 200 minutes of first-team football for RB Leipzig this season and the 22-year-old is reportedly keen on leaving the Bundesliga club this month in search of more game time.
The Magpies are reportedly hoping to take the former Everton winger on loan, whereas Leipzig would prefer a sale and value him in excess of £20m.
And speaking at his press conference ahead of Saturday’s trip to Wolves, Bruce confirmed the current situation.
“I’ve been linked with 38 players that have been run past me. He’s one of them,” said Bruce when asked about Lookman.
“He’s a good player, I like him, but it’s a bit far off at the minute.”
Bruce is hoping to add at least one new arrival to his squad before the transfer window closes, but he also admits that doing business in January is always tricky.
“We’re like everybody else. We said from day one that January was always going to be difficult,” he added.
“I’ve said all along that if we can improve the team. I’ll try to do it. That goes for midfield, up front for a defender.
“It’s fair to say we would like to add to our firepower, of course we would, but it’s very difficult.”
