Spain’s oldest professional club, Recreativo de Huelva, is set to be bought for €1 after the Huelva city council cleared the club’s debt.

Recreativo celebrated their 128th birthday in last year but have been threatened with extinction.

As recently as 2006, Recro were in the Primera Division but have found themselves financially mismanaged over the past decade.

The Andalucia-based club find themselves languishing in Spain’s regionalised third tier but their €7.6m debts have now been paid off by the city, along with other debts to electrical company Endesa.
