New York Red Bulls and United States international centre-back Aaron Long was close to securing a move to West Ham over the summer, but he was not able to make the switch due to work permit issues.

Now, the 2018 MLS Defender of the Year is set to relocate to the Premier League after all.

Accoring to the Mirror, Southampton are ready to trigger the 27-year-old’s release clause, which is said to be around £5m.

The Saints are woefully in 19th place mainly due to the Premier League-worst 29 goals allowed and Long would undoubtedly help alleviate many of their defensive issues.

It wouldn’t be the first piece of business between the two clubs, as Josh Sims spent the second half of the MLS season on loan with the Red Bulls, scoring a goal and adding an assist in eight games.
