Just two years ago, Mauricio Pellegrino and Southampton splashed an eye-watering €16m to bring in Wesley Hoedt from Lazio in an attempt to create a formidable partnership with Virgil van Dijk.

While van Dijk has since left to become one of the best players in all of world football, Hoedt’s career has spiralled in the opposite direction, with the 26-year-old finding himself on loan with Royal Antwerp.

With the Belgian side very unlikely to be able to afford his £7m option-to-buy, the Saints will be attempting to offload Hoedt with two years remaining on his original five-year contract.

According to Belgian outlet Voetbal Nieuws, Southampton have offered Hoedt to mid-table Serie A side Bologna.

It’s very much expected that, in an effort to cut wages this summer, the Saints will also offload Guido Carrillo, Mario Lemina, and Mohamed Elyounoussi.
