Shaqiri provided a perfectly-weighted pass to assist Mohamed Salah midway through the first half, which meant Liverpool left the John Smith’s Stadium with all three points.
The 27-year-old has enjoyed a mixed start to his Reds career but was happy to take advice from Jürgen Klopp about how to improve his chances of playing more regularly.
“I started off in a midfield three and it was something new,” he told the club’s official website. “Normally I’m more offensive but I think I can play there.
“The coach wanted me to play between the lines and it worked out. I was really happy to start the game and I tried to give the manager a good performance.
“My teammates know that I’m a player who can play that last pass. Mo made a good run and I gave him a perfect ball, so it was a good goal. We’re happy.”
Liverpool host Serbian side Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League on Wednesday, before returning to Premier League action against Cardiff on October 27.
