Southampton striker Shane Long knows he is playing for his future at the club.

The 32-year-old has struggled for form this season, scoring just four goals in 23 Premier League appearances.

However, Long continues to improve under Ralph Hasenhüttl and insists he is working hard to prove himself.

“I think with the last four or five performances I’ve put in, there have been some good ones in there,” he told the Daily Echo.

“I’ve only got a year left on my contract and I don’t think I’ve earned the right to go knocking on the door, asking for more years.

“As a striker you need goals and I am trying to put my case forward between now and the end of the season.

“Everyone knows I love it here and I know next season is going to be a big season because of the confidence the manager has instilled around the place and I want to be a part of that.”

Long has one-year left on his current deal and fresh talks are yet to begin.
