It has been another exciting season in Italy so far – and it looks like we have a real title race on our hands!
But who have been the star men?
This is our team of the season to date …
The Granata guardian has been one of Serie A’s most consistent ‘keepers for several years and is showing why that is the case yet again.
His displays against Sassuolo, Milan and Juventus belong on his lengthy highlight reel.
You have to be performing at a ridiculous level to stand out in a defence that also includes Diego Godín and Milan Škriniar.
The fact that the exceptional Dutchman has done just that tells you all you need to know.
The inspirational cancer survivor has started every game for the Aquile this season and stepped up for his country when they needed him too.
He rarely gets the credit he deserves but he’s undoubtedly one of Europe’s best centre-backs.
Many raised an eyebrow and expected little when Roma swooped to sign Smalling on loan from Manchester United but any critics have been made to eat their words.
The Englishman has arguably been the league’s top defender this season and was imperious in their draw at Inter in early December against a star-studded attack.
The 19-year-old Atalanta loanee has been the breakout star of this Serie A season, excelling for Parma no matter where he plays.
He has popped up in several positions in midfield and attack and been devastating, with four goals and seven assists already in his maiden full senior season.
Issues with the Inter hierarchy and his wife’s health meant that Radja Nainggolan has ended up at Cagliari in what is one of the steals of the season.
Nahitan Nández and João Pedro have also stood out for the Isolani but the Belgian remains the heartbeat of the team.
The Spanish playmaker is the first name on this team sheet – such has been his influence in Serie A this season.
No player in Europe has more than his 11 assists and he has also chipped in with three goals. There is perhaps no player more important to his team than Luis Alberto.
But speaking of individuals who are important to their team, the talismanic ‘Papu’ Gomez has been up to his usual heroics in Bergamo this season.
Even while juggling Champions League commitments, the Atalanta skipper has contributed four goals and five assists to the cause in Serie A, where he remains the main man.
What a season it has been for La Joya. From the club actively attempting to offload him in the summer to the key figure by December, it has been quite the turnaround.
It was a close run thing between Dybala and João Pedro for this spot but we needed a Juventus player and he has put the team on his back more than once this season.
Juventus winning the league. Milan devolving into another crisis. Ciro Immobile banging goals in week after week. These are the things we can hang our hat on in Italy.
This year has been no different either, with the Biancocelesti marksman on target an incredible 17 times in just 15 starts this season!
This was another close run thing between the Argentine and his strike partner Romelu Lukaku but we are opting for ‘El Toro’.
Why? He simply always looks like a threat when in possession, defenders are terrified of him and the reputation he carries and has rounded his game this season to such an extent that there are very little weaknesses.
