Alexander Nübel’s Schalke contract is up at the end of the season and there has been much speculation about his future.
The 23-year-old has blossomed into one of the finer talents in the Bundesliga since his €600,000 move from Paderborn four years ago, with many branding him the ‘next Manuel Neuer’ due to his similar style of play.
Though it’s certain Nübel will remain in Germany, with both Bayern and rivals Dortmund very interested, he has remained coy on what’s next.
The German youth international rejected a contract extension in October that would have seen him stay until 2024 while giving him a €100,000-per-week salary.
“Sure, some things have been coming together a little bit for more than two, three months,” he told Spox. “But I still have not made a decision.”
When asked if he could follow in Jen Lehmann’s footsteps and play for both Schalke and Dortmund, Nübel gave a rather surprisingly candid response.
“I think so. The question is, but whether you change directly from one to another or still has clubs in between. Of course this will happen in the future in isolated cases.”
The last player to move from Schalke directly to Borussia Dortmund was Steffen Freund in 1993.
