It was not just the fans and players of River Plate who celebrated Copa Libertadores title on Sunday.

Those involved with São Paulo FC were thrilled to see River see off rivals Boca Juniors in the final, as former striker Lucas Pratto lifted the trophy – which awarded SPFC a cool €1m, a huge sum in South American football.

The striker was sold to River in January and there was a clause in Pratto’s contract that guaranteed a €1m bonus to the Brazilian team in case River Plate took home the Libertadores title.

Pratto scored the equaliser in the 68th minute after Boca had gone to half-time with a 1-0 lead.

River went on to win the second leg 3-1 (5-3 on aggregate) with a pair of goals in extra time after the two teams couldn’t be separated in regular time.

River Plate bought the 30-year-old Pratto in January for a whopping €11.5m, a sum that has clearly been worth every penny.
