Manager Dante Siboldi achieved a heroic triumph by defeating champion Tigres 2-0 with 10 men for most of the match and qualified for the semifinal of the 2018 Clausura.
Paraguayan Osvaldo MartĂnez and the Cape Verdean Djaniny scored for Santos that had lost 2-0 in the first leg. They equalised in the series but advanced to the semi-finals due to their higher finish in the table.
It was a match where Santos came out to attack, while Tigres were more than happy to try and defend their two-goal advantage.
In the 17th minute, on a free kick, MartĂnez fired the ball over the wall and into the net to give Santos a 1-0 lead that gave Siboldiâs men a critical first goal.
In the 28th minute, Jonathan RodrĂguez was sent off and Santos, instead of surrendering, attacked and defended in harmony and put up a spectacular performance against a rival who didnât really threaten at all in the first half and saw Enner Valencia subbed off at half-time.
Santos would get their deserved reward in the 73rd minute when Djaninyâs seemingly-harmless shot rolled off Nahuel GuzmĂĄnâs hands and over the line to send the Estadio Corona into a frenzy.
Tigres have already qualified for the Campeón de Campeones by winning the 2017 Apertura and will face the winner of the 2018 Clausura. Tigres are defending back-to-back champions.
Santos Laguna will face Club América in the semi-finals, with Tijuana and Toluca facing off in the other half of the bracket.
