Santos Laguna remained unbeaten at home and moved into first place in the Liga MX Apertura table with a 1-0 win over Monterrey on Friday night.

Julio Furch’s league-leading 11th goal of the season separated the two sides, who engaged in an extremely tight battle.

Santos have nearly qualified for the post-season – no team has ever missed the post-season after amassing 28 points.

Monterrey continued their run of poor form, as they have only tasted victory twice since their 5-1-1 start to the season.

After winning the ball in a one-on-one duel against Rayados captain José Basanta, Furch slotted the ball into the bottom corner to give Santos an early lead.

In the second half, Rayados finished with a slight possession advantage, but were flat on the attack, despite the influence of Jesús Gallardo and Rogelio Funes Mori.

Santos won’t hold their first place position for very long, as they will be overtaken by either Club América or Cruz Azul tomorrow.

Monterrey remained in fifth place on 23 points but could drop to sixth if Toluca comes up with a result against Querétaro this weekend.
