The Peixe started the match on the front foot and controlled much of the proceedings. Diego Pituca set up Yeferson Soteldo to force goalkeeper Tiago Volpi into a save in the 18th minute.

To underline the intensity on display before the opening goal, players from the two sides went forehead-to-forehead on two separate occasions but neither escalated into shoving matches.

Just before the break, the home team grabbed the lead. Centre back Luiz Felipe got in front of his mark Robert Arboleda and headed Jean Mota’s service past Volpi from close range in the 45th minute.

Coming out for the second half, Santos returned to business as usual. In the 61st minute, Volpi easily collected a long-range effort from Pituca.

Soon after, midfielder Alison sent González on a counter attack and the Paraguayan winger rounded the goalkeeper to pass the ball into the back of the net.

González doubled the Santos lead in the 67th minute.

The best chance that São Paulo could muster in the second half came from a corner kick in the 83rd minute. Éverton knocked the ball on frame but the effort deflected and hit off the outside of the crossbar.

The victory maintains a perfect start to the Campeonato Paulista campaign for Santos after three matches.

São Paulo are still top of Group D but have six points after matchday 3.
