Chapecoense ended their run of 20 away matches without a win with a 1-0 upset of Santos on Monday night.
Chapeâs monumental win took nearly took them out of the relegation zone, as they are now level on 37 points with Sport Recife, trailing only on total wins.
Santos missed out on a valuable chance to jump into the Copa Libertadores places and now remain one point behind AtlÊtico Mineiro for a spot in the top six.
Santos came out of the gate with all the momentum and looked the much better side, nearly scoring twice within the first 20 minutes of the match.
The home side somehow missed the target from less than five yards out after a scramble in front of goal. Shortly thereafter, Chape goalkeeper Jandrei made a decent save from a dangerous free-kick.
In the 29th minute, Leandro Pereira scored completely against the run of play, firing his shot into the empty net after a poor attempted clearance by the Santos defence.
At half-time, Santos elected to make a pair of substitutions they wouldnât have expected to make prior to the match, inserting future Real Madrid attacker Rodrygo Goes and the talented Arthur in for Costa Rica captain Bryan Ruiz and Daniel.
However, these changes would be wouldnât give Santos the results they desired, as all 11 of their second-half shots were off target.
With five matches to play, both teams are in a dogfight to achieve their respective goals.
Santos will next travel to Rio to take on Flamengo Thursday afternoon, while Chape will host Botafogo at the same time.
