At this time last year, Santiago Cáseres was a fairly regular starter in LaLiga and was preparing for Villarreal’s Europa League round-of-32 clash with Sporting.

The soon-to-be 23-year-old’s situation dramatically changed this season, not featuring whatsoever in Spain, prompting a move to Liga MX giants Club América.

Cáseres, who is seen as a temporary Guido Rodríguez replacement, made his full debut at the end of last week’s win over Querétaro and is expected to play a bigger role once his fitness levels are up.

“ I am acclimating to the height,” he said. “The club has surprised me more than I expected, but from the first day I realized its greatness.

“I had offers from Europe, although I considered that América was the best option. Since they called me, I knew it was the right decision. I’m very happy here.”

Through five games, América are currently fourth in the standings on 10 points, just two points behind leaders Club León. América host Atlas this Saturday.
