Sam Allardyce is hoping to get back into management and has his sights set on a return to former club Sunderland.

That’s a very interesting claim made by The Sun, who say Allardyce could end up going back to the Stadium of Light if the Black Cats are taken over by an American consortium.

Sunderland chairman Stewart Donald is currently in talks with four businessmen named John Phelan, Robert Platek, Glenn Furhman and Michael Dell regarding the sale of a controlling stake in the club.

If the deal goes through, Donald is expected to remain involved in the day-to-day running of the Wearsiders, while current manager Jack Ross will be given the chance to get them out of League One this season.

If he succeeds, The Sun say Ross will be given at least one more season after this one but if not, Allardyce is waiting in the wings.

The 64-year-old enjoyed a successful spell in charge at the Stadium of Light before he left to take the England job in 2016.

He has been out of work since leaving Everton at the end of the 2017/18 season and he reportedly feels he still has one more big job in him.

Sunderland’s potential new owners are said to want the club back in the Premier League as soon as possible and there has also been talk of hiring a director of football.

Whether Allardyce would be considered for that role is currently unknown.
