Newcastle have only scored six goals so far this season and find themselves rock-bottom of the Premier League table through nine matches.

Though Rafa Benítez was able to bring in strikers Yoshinori Muto and Salomon Rondon this summer, he felt as if he needed one more option in addition to Ayoze Perez and Joselu.

During Newcastle’s 1-0 loss to Brighton over the weekend, the Magpies again lacked their finishing touch as they weren’t able to score despite 27 shots, including six on target.

Now former PL midfielder and BBC pundit Robbie Savage believes Newcastle won’t be able to attract a quality striker in the January window.

“Steve Bruce one said to me: ‘you’re only as good as your strikers, that’s why they get paid the most money and go for the biggest fees,” he told 606.

“Now in January, if you’re Newcastle looking for a centre-forward (A) you’re in the bottom three and (B) unless you’re going to pay £150,000-£200,000 a-week and take a chance on somebody, who is going to go there?

“To finish 10th last year, was to massively over achieve but you look at the bottom three now; Huddersfield only have four goals this season, up until Saturday, Cardiff only scored four, they’ve now got eight.

“But I’m looking at Newcastle and Huddersfield, who is going to score the goals to keep them up? Something needs to happen and happen fast or they are going to go down.”

Newcastle will have a decent chance to get their first win of the season on Saturday when they travel to St. Mary’s to face Southampton.
