It seems Paris Saint-Germain came closer to signing Idrissa Gueye from Everton in January than we might have thought.

The Ligue 1 giants were in the market for a new midfielder and were strongly linked with Senegal international Gueye, but the move failed to materialise and Leandro Paredes ultimately ended up moving to the Parc des Princes instead.

And according to France Football, it was all the fault of Lyon midfielder Lucas Tousart.

PSG were reportedly unwilling to meet Everton’s €40m asking price for Gueye and the Premier League club were unwilling to negotiate unless they could sign a replacement.

The Toffees were priced out of a move for Watford’s Abdoulaye Doucouré so they turned their attention to Tousart instead.

But, the 21-year-old holding midfielder is said to have rejected both a move to Goodison Park and Zenit Saint Petersburg in order to stay at Lyon, meaning Gueye was forced to stay put too.

Whether Everton will renew their interest in Tousart in the summer, or whether PSG will go back in for Gueye, remains to be seen.
